29 Sep Oktoberfest returns
The chill in the air has returned and the days are becoming shorter again – autumn is setting in. Glum as this may sound, it is in fact our favourite time of the year as it means Oktoberfest is upon us once again.
Along with the WEST Oktoberfest festivities, which will take place over at the original WEST venue WEST On The Green, comes the seasonal Oktoberfest beer from WEST, brewed to a new recipe each year. This year’s recipe revisits the 2014 Oktoberfest brew.
This year’s beer is once again a traditional Märzen style beer (5.3% ABV). A rich copper coloured lager, it is brewed with Tettnang and Tradition hops. Hints of biscuit and toast flavours and an initial malty sweetness are balanced by a moderate hop bitterness.
Traditionally, Oktoberfest beers are always a ‘Märzen’ style beer, with ‘März’ meaning March in German. This is because these beers were brewed in the spring months, and stored in cool cellars over summer when it was too warm for beer to be brewed. The remaining beer was then consumed during the October festivities in order to clear out the season’s beer before brewing resumed again.
‘Märzen’ beers are a deep amber or copper colour, full bodied with a malty finish, and generally between 5% and 6% ABV as the higher alcohol (as well as hop) content serves as a preservative.
Make sure you come by for a pint (or stein) of Oktoberfest to warm you up one of these crisp autumn evenings. For the month of October we will also offer special paired sharing platters – find the menu here.
